The Illinois Civic Mission Coalition, of which the Barat Education Foundation is a member, has announced that five schools have been awarded Democracy Schools status. This prestigious designation recognizes schools who provide their students with “authentic experiences with the rights, responsibilities and tensions inherent in living in a constitutional democracy. Through these experiences, participating schools strive to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for informed and effective engagement in our democracy.”
Among the most recently named Democracy Schools is Josephinum Academy, an early participant in Our American Voice™ and the physical home of the Barat Education Foundation. Other honorees include Maine East High School, where numerous previous OAV participants attend high school, and Adlai E. Stevenson High School, where BEF Program Director Dr. Mara Grujanac is involved as Stevenson’s Coordinator of Parent Engagement.
