Congratulations to the Komensky Elementary OAV students in District 100, South Berwyn!
Today, March 3rd, Principal Mariana Nicasio announced that Foresters Financials have agreed to fund their Playground for All project which they have been working on for almost 3 years. The project began when a group of OAV students realized that their school’s playground wasn’t accessible to students in the Developmental Learning Program (DLP). To be an inclusive playground, the OAV students realized four things were needed:
- You can get there
- It’s safe
- You can use parts of the playground
- You can join the circle of play with all the children
After calculating the cost of improving the playground, the students knew they couldn’t complete the project by the end of the school year. Instead of becoming discouraged, they decided to recruit the fourth-grade students who would take their place and they never gave up on raising the funds! Student Jada captured it best when she said her moto is “We’re kids…have fun while you still can. For the DLP kids, we want to make that happen for them.”
As the students began to research and to survey teachers, students and parents, they realized that the change needed to be bigger. Their action became a catalyst for involving the larger community in this effort. They have also received support from the mayor and Berwyn firefighters.
On April 13th, 2017, students, parents, and community members of Komensky School will have an opportunity to plan a final playground design. Then, on Saturday, June 10th, 2017 in ONE day, they will build a great new place for kids to play.
Thank You OAV Students and Dan King their teacher who has worked tirelessly on this project. We are so proud that you hung in there with this wonderful community project.
